Stephen Sellers TKAM/MWB Seminar
One of the key ideas that came up in the Socratic seminar was how scout couldn't exactly be the person she wanted to be because whenever she did something girly , Jem or Dill would always say “stop acting like a girl even though she was a girl” we discovered that the reason this happens is because scout grew up in a house of boys she never really had a mom or a sister to bond with and learn the woman's ways. Another key topic that came up was Boo Radley and we were trying to figure out what part he plays in the book like is he a character or a non important character and we thought that he was more of a metaphor or the author referred to him as the title To Kill A Mockingbird which then sparked another key idea which is why is the book call To Kill A Mockingbird. Now this one really stumped me entell one of my peers brought up a very good point which was the title didn't refer to just one chapter in the book it referred to all of them it refers to how over time things change and start to die out which I think is displayed in the book To Kill A MockingBird because at the start of the book every thing seemed fine and dandy but the farther you get in the book the more you realize that scout, jem, dill, and atticus started to experience the struggles in life.
A question in this Socratic seminar that I thought was mind-blowing and really got me thinking was if an African child grows up in a white family how would he or she be socialized or if a white child was born in an African American family how would he or she be socialized? And my first thought was what's the difference from being socialized in any family of any race, is there any difference at all. In my opinion there's not, no matter what race you are we are all socialized to ideally the same way our beliefs might be the difference but all together we all have our own minds and our own bodies and no matter who raised you, you decide on who you are and your actions shape who you are.
When I came into the seminar I felt very prepared and ready to go but as people started to talk about the book in detail I realized that I forgot a lot of the book even though I read the whole thing and wrote down annotations although my annotations seemed to be scattered and hard to find and not as detailed as I wanted them to be. I think one of the biggest things I struggled with in this Socratic seminar was trying to put together my thoughts, as soon as a person talk about the book or made a key idea id remember an important detail but I wouldn't know how to put the words together to create a sentence and speak it out of my mind and by the time I would almost say something another person would speak or the conversation would change. One of the things I really enjoyed about this Socratic seminar was hearing other people's thoughts and ideas and then combining everyone's thoughts and creating mindblowing ideas. A goal id like to set for our next book or seminar is too really try to find out the answers to the deepest and darkest mysteries in the book and then share the answers in the seminar we have.
In my opinion this book does matter and doesn't matter the reason it matters is because it has important feedback to live a successful life and really learn more about yourself but the reason why this book doesn't matter is because by the end of this semester the life lesson that this book taught us will probably be stored and forgotten way back in our brains, its just the honest truth.

Socialization
Socialization has many effects on us and our society. Some say without socialization we are not classified as a functioning human being because without socialization what are we? Socialization has positive effects on us but not only positive effects it also has negative effects. Socialization incorporates many roles such as racism, how we are raised, education, our religions, daily media, how we communicate in our daily lives, and many others. Some of these topics are affect some more than others but they all tie into socialization. What is socialization? According to the dictionary, socialization has two meanings one “the activity of mixing socially with others” (google) and two “the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable in society.” (google) Both of these definitions are true about socialization but it think it goes deeper than this. Our society accepts certain thing and does not accept others. For example, a five year old boy named Dyson Quelo Davis loves to wear dresses. His mom does not accept the fact that her son loved to wear dresses and the other close parent does not accept it either. Sooner or later, the mother realizes she needs to accept her son’s fantasy about dresses and then becomes a gender odyssey believer and fighter. Through her acceptance, she started to notice how society has grown into a big ball of hate of the psychological steriolation idea. This shows a negative effect of socialization and how our society can't accept people for who they are because they believe that it is wrong to show gender expression as a girl when really your a boy. This is known as psychological steriolation and this same kind of thinking goes for many other roles such as not accepting someone for their color or race which has been a problem for some time. When slavery started in the 1400s and end in 1863, it took that long for people to realize what they were doing was wrong and all people, regardless of color, should have equal rights in our society and we should all be socialized in a corrective manner. Socialization is a very important part of a human being and some say without it what exactly are we? We classify this state of living without socialization as a feral child. A feral child is when a baby is raised without socialization, without being taught how to speak or how to walk and crawl, and without being taught the confusing topic known as socialization. Without socialization, one does not know how to approach certain situations correctly or does not know how to function like an everyday human being in our society. As surprising as it is, there has been some cases of feral children. For example, there was a very young girl raised by dogs because her parents were drunks and would always forget about her and accidently locked her outside for too long. Her way of staying alive was learning how to become a dog. The girl was 3 and her name was Acsona Miliya. When she was found, she acted like a dog and and did so for five years. She acted exactly like a dog. She could speak only in barks; she could only crawl; she would howl and pick up bones with her mouth; the people around would say she not a human being; she's like a little dog. Acsona is still alive today and barely can speak any words. The true question is can a child who has been ignored, completely isolated since the beginning of their childhood, not loved and never had social interactions come back from the word they are defined as, “feral child”, and be accepted in our society or even socialized? Many ask this question and no one knows if it will ever be answered. What must be remembered is to be thankful for how loving one’s parents are and their dedication to raising one with care and love and to teaching one socialization and the gift of being accepted in our society. A man name Ashanti Branch explains the term socialization in a clear way. He expressed socialization using a mask. He first sat down with a group of students and told then to write down the things they show or express at school such as emotions and then, on the back of the mask, he asked the group of students to write what they don't show at school. Many of the student wrote on the front about the good sides of their emotions such as being funny, outgoing, caring, and entertaining. Then on the back, numerous students wrote negative emotions such as pain, fear, and sadness. This was a great way to show socialization in our society! With my mask, I did something similar. Instead of writing the negative effects of socialization on the back side on the mask, I put it on one side of my mask and the other side was the front of the mask My mask has two sides to it. One side represents the beautiful earth and where all the positive effects of socialization are and what its main structure of socialization is. The other side represents the bad side of the earth where all the mistakes are and what all the negative effects of socialization are. I tried to show in my mask that in our world there is a good side and a bad side. I referenced the good as a positive effect and the bad as a negative effect of socialization all around. Within these two good and bad sides, I created mini hints of what happens in socialization on a daily basis. One of the hints I drew on the good side is green spots which symbolizes grass and trees, but of course, it goes deeper than that. The green also represents the happy things in life such as christmas and all the memories stored in your head of the loving time and experiences you had with your parents and siblings, sometimes even friends but mostly the daily things you do that makes you smile. Another mini hint was a river running down all sides of the mask. I wanted this to show that even on the good side there still can be crying and pain but it's a different side of crying and pain than the pain and sadness grief brings you for example. It is the happy tears you cry when you’re so happy for someone. On the bad side, I made rivers of magma to represent the bad side of crying and pain like when someone is depressed or feeling a pain that others are putting on you also known as bullying or being abused or even as I explained earlier not being accepted by others for who you are. As shown above, socialization has many twists and turn. Numerous factors play into the twists and most thing play into the turns of socialization but one thing we can not put our finger on is how socialization is played into our society. Is it a bad thing or is it a good thing? Would it be better to not have socialization or would it be better to have even more of it?
Mask Reflection
Mask Reflection
What I’m most proud about my mask is really the outcome and how much creativity i put into it with the mixed colors and the 2 sided face i thought were a genius idea in my opinion and as hard as it was i think it's all worth it in the end
2)what are you the most proud of on your essay
I'm most proud of the insightful word choice I put in my essay and also I felt that I went really in depth on my mask and did my best to explain it in the most detailed way I could. Overall, I'm just proud of me getting it done in the first place especially since it came out so well.
3)What was your biggest takeaway from this project
My biggest takeaway from this project is that we make history every day. History is a big part of our lives. For example, when a group of people or someone starts a protest, they create a new history event. Socialization is also a big part of our lives and in shaping who we are. For example, girls being stereotyped into being weak and liking pink. This shapes a girl into feeling lesser than a man.
4)Which habit and heart and mind can you most improve on
I feel like I could improve on efficiency because at times during the project I would slacked off and goofed around. I never really stayed completely efficient on my mask project. A way I could work on this and do better is for next time to find a peer to work with so I never get distracted because my partner would help me stay on track.
